POLICE INTELLIGENCE.
TUESDAY.
MARY DONOVAN, on being introduced to the Court, curtsied with that ease and bearing of manner which is inseparable to those who are on intimate terms of visiting acquaintanceship—and lavished on the Chief Constable such a bland smile, and knowing wink of the sinister optic, that if RYAN had not a heart of stone he never could have withstood the influence of the evil eye—but, alas, not “having a wink upon him,” he deposed that on the previous evening he found MARY realizing [sic] the beautiful ballad of the Bewildered Maid, sitting on the bank of the street gutter, in Marsden-street, telling her woes, in abbreviated English, to a numerous audience of ostler and boys. The Cat-ilini style in which the air was sung, attracted the Chief’s notice, and as he affirmed it was given con-spirito, he took her into custody, lest like the musician of old—”stones” might happen to follow it. As this was DONOVAN’s third appearance within a fortnight, and although a public character, her means of obtaining a livelihood were extremely ambiguous—she was sent to the Factory as a disorderly and idle character—the latter epithet being rather an erroneous one, as there wasnot [sic] in the whole district a more active person in getting up a row.
