POLICE INTELLIGENCE.

THURSDAY.

JANE JAMES [aka JANE JONES] and WM. LYNAM [WILLIAM LYNAM], the first a female not unknown to Fame in Parramatta, and which had at the last Quarter Sessions, procured her a situation in the Factory, for twelve months—and the second an attache to the Governor’s dairy establishment, in the Domain, were charged—JAMES, with being a scaley character in climbing over the Factory wall, and LYNAM, with too great philanthropy, displayed in succouring, assisting, and harbouring her.

It seemed that early on the previous day JANE had contrived to elude the vigilance of the wise seers and overseers of MR. and MRS. SMYTH’s boarding school [the Female Factory], and eloped not in a carriage and four but on “shanks'” poney [sic]. A hue and cry being raised at so valuable a personage being scarce, constables clean searched the bush by “scouring” it, but to constable LYNCH was reserved the transcendent honour of capturing the missing Bird of Paradise. Wending his steps to the Government Domain, in a hut at the dairy, JAMES was discovered enjoying the flavour and fragrancy of the weed. It is almost unnecessary to add that the appearance of this member of RYAN’s staff corps put the lady’s pipe out, and as LYNAM had been seen proceeding, a few minutes previously, to the spot where she was found smoking a “‘dudan,” which greatly resembled the one found using by her, and subsequently leaving the hut without one, it was supposed that he was not ignorant of her being there, and as her peculiar attire, simple russet gown, gaol-like apron, for it was a “cross-bar” pattern, and cable-plaited hair, all “ringlets” except iron ones, being contrary to regulations, gave the uniform Factory appearance, it was reasonably surmised he must have known that she was a bolter from under “lock and key.”

JAMES made no attempt to deny the running away, but said she left her place of abode because she wanted something—but, what that something was, left ingenuity to devise; and, on being sentenced two months, in addition to her present sentence, a fortnight of it to be passed in the cells, thanked the Bench, and informed them “she could do it.” —LYNAM stating he could bring witnesses to clear himself from the charge preferred against him, was remanded for that purpose.

POLICE INTELLIGENCE

SATURDAY

WM. LYNUM (bond) who had been accused, on the preceding Thrsday [sic], of rendering certain delicate attentions to MISS JAMES, on her elopement from the Factory, by concealing her in a hut, and treating her to a smoke of his pipe, and remanded for the purpose of procuring evidence to exculpate himself. The only witness called by him for the defence turning out one more for the prosecution was doomed for his hiding of the young lady, to get a hiding of another description from the Court, in the shape of fourteen days to the cells.
