POLICE INTELLIGENCE.
SATURDAY.
ELIZABETH STUART (ticket-of-leave), the better-half, according to law, and the worst, according to fact, of one GEORGE WRIGHT, was charged by the Chief Constable with disorderly conduct, a term which appeared to have been employed as an abbreviation for about half a dozen charges which could have been brought against her.
It appeared that as RYAN, on the previous day, was returning home, after beating the bounds of the town, some person informed him that the prisoner was beyond all bounds, and that she had been sending her husband to that dread bourne whence no traveller returns, but the “extremely rapid cut” of a crow-bar. RYAN therefore immediately posted to the residence of the murderess, and, on arrival, his ears were assailed with a noise before which a coppersmith sinks into utter insignificance. The burden of Mrs. WRIGHT’s bar-carole was, however, death to all the world in general, but to her husband in particular. Admittance was demanded, but refused, accompanied with a hunt that he was on that side of the door which was best adapted for running away, and, although it was no less a personage than the Chief Constable, the lady stated that her parties were strictly private, and that she never admitted public officers to her flare-ups. MR. WRIGHT, however, begged that a burglary might be committed on his premises, by the door being forced open, which being complied with, he was forced by his ELIZABETH, in order that he might expire, as she had formerly resolved that he should be no longer a clog on a woman, who was a pattern for her sex, and although adverse fortune and a parson had given her to him, a Jemmy should play the devil and Tommy with him, by causing a divorce, all which, however the prisoner, who had betaken herself to bed, and was found there by RYAN, just as if nothing at all happened, on his entrance, affirmed to be a mere hallucination of her husband’s brain: if she had a fault it was being too fond of him; but as she was in that happy state when people are said to talk too glibly, the assertion was doubted and the lady was sent to the watch-house. On examining the premises, “the James” was found erect behind the door, and almost every article of furniture had been put, through a course of Fractions, the result of which was, not one of them was whole. Some neighbours having confirmed the Chief Constable’s statement and given such slight additional testimony, as went to prove that scenes like the present were by no means of rare occurrence, the Court, with a careful consideration for the peace of the neighbourhood, cancelled her ticket, and directed her to be taken care of, in the Factory, for the next two months.
