POLICE INTELLIGENCE.

THURSDAY.

ANN FLINN [sic] (or now, as her husband said, unfortunately) CAHILL (bond), appeared as respondent to a devorce [sic], which her husband was endeavouring to obtain through the aid of the Bench. It appeared, years since, MISS FLYNN [sic] was a young lady possessed of such winning charms that it was wholly impossible for any one possessing a susceptible heart in his bosom, or the parson’s fee in his pocket, to avoid committing matrimony. But if ANN, at such time, was a witch, since marriage she became a hag. She was now everything that a wife ought not to be. Public-houses had become preferable to his own private house, and friendly yarns had superseded the application of worsted ones to his hose. Being a man of mild temperament and having taken his wife for better or worse, he had borne the infliction long and submissively; but insult being added to misery, himself blackguarded in his own house, and kicked about as if he were merely a coal-scuttle or some other small article of domestic furniture, as he had been on the previous evening, his wrath rose, and a constable happening to pass the door, he consigned her to his care. MRS. CAHILL pleaded, as an excuse, for the strong and forceible [sic] language she admitted having employed, strong irritation and “agrawation,” [sic] but whether such arose from any suspicion of unlawfulness on the part of her husband, or was the effect of rum, of which, according to the apprehending constable’s statement, his olfactories told him her breath emitted a scent strong enough to form a hat-peg, she did not condescend to enlighten the Court, and as this was something very like a third appearance before the Bench, which, if allowed to occur again, all CAHILL’s substance would be reduced to a shadow, the required divorce was pronounced, and the lady retired to the Factory.
