Unidentified Woman

Evidence Type: Newspaper Report
11 November 1829

A frail handmaid paid her respects next to the Bench, and strove “with lowly suit and plaintive ditty” to prove that the charge against her of absconding from her service for four long days without leave or license, was produced by bad usage at the hands of her master; but the Bench not feeling disposed, nor seeing reason to place the utmost credence in this tale, directed that the frail vagrant should take a trip into the country, and there dwell under charge of the matron of the female factory for two months ensuing.
