POLICE INTELLIGENCE.
MONDAY.
BERTHA HUTCHINSON (bond) was charged with having been guilty of gross insolence to, and refusal to work for, her assignee, MR. CARRINGTON.
The learned ex-Crown Prosecutor’s indictment was a general one, the tenor of BERTHA’s conduct had been so uniformly it [sic: at] variance with what was considered good behaviour, that he did not consider it necessary to occupy the Court in bringing forward any distinct separate charges, save and except the last, which appeared to be, according to the statement of MRS. CARRINGTON, that HUTCHINSON, had, on being asked, while she was scouring the floor, to clean a pair of scissors, merely said that she would do so when she had finished the work on which she was then employed. HUTCHINSON, in her defence, stated that the charge against her was the asking for wages, and constable BYRNES being called by the prosecuterix [sic], made it worse than bad for that side of the question, inasmuch as his testimony went to prove that HUTCHINSON was not altogether quite so evil in her ways and behaviour as she had been represented. MR. RYAN having been put into the box by the accused, confirmed her statement, of having been called convict —— : we will not repeat the words or terms, as they are such which, considering the respectable position of the parties in society, ought to have been unknown, much less used by some members of MR. C’s family. The Police Magistrate stated that although the prisoner’s conduct was not perhaps wholly free from censure, there had been evidently great provication [sic] given, and he had made it a rule never to sanction the unfortunate class to which this girl belonged, being taunted with their position in life. The prisoner was ordered to be returned to Government, and the wages due to her to be paid.
