POLICE.
TUESDAY.
HANNAH TODD, assigned to inspector FOX, was charged by her master with constant neglect of her duty. It appeared that FOX was absent on the previous day in Sydney, and, his wife being unwell, had given particular instructions to HANNAH to pay attention to the household duties; but, no sooner had her master departed, than HANNAH too went off, taking with her the infant child of her master. FOX, on his return from Sydney, came up George-street, with the steam of an expected dinner already in his fancy, filling his nostrils; but alas for the vanity of human wishes, FOX’s dinner was to be in fancy only, for, on arriving at his domicile, HANNAH was out, the fire, following her example, had gone out likewise, and all that FOX could find was his wife—in bed, to which she was confined by sickness. FOX was consequently obliged to devour his wrath and bread and cheese, until the arrival of the errant HANNAH. On her return, she met the indignant gaze of her master, and her fate stared her in the face; with the resolution of a stoic, she resigned herself to what she forsaw [sic] would be her lot, and seating herself calmly upon a stool, began smoking. FOX enquired of his children where they had been, and learnt, to his horror, that HANNAH, his servant, servant to an Inspector of Police, had been amusing herself by shying pipes and tobacco over the wall of the 3rd Class Factory. This put the climax on the indignation of the worthy Inspector, and she was borne off to the lowest depth of the watch-house. The Bench, for her manifold transgressions, and in consideration of her affection for the Third Class of the Factory, sent her to that chaste abode for two months.
