SATURDAY.
GETTING A TICKET.—SARAH TAYLOR, SUSAN HENEY, and GEORGE PTLOLEMY [sic] (all bond) were arraigned before the Bench under the following circumstances : — His Excellency Sir GEORGE GIPPS, in the plenitude of his mercy, having been pleased to grant unto the two female prisoners tickets-of-leave, they were dispatched from the Female Factory, at about six o’clock on the previous evening, under the convoy of PTLOLEMY, (the messenger to that establishment; and who, on this occasion, acted as a sort of Brigadier-General of the baggage department,) to be seen safely stowed in the Penrith coach, in order to proceed to their districts. By seven o’clock the trio were inmates of the watch-house. HENEY having got that drunk that the coachman refused to allow her a place on his vehicle, and TAYLOR being fast approaching the same enviable state. The plea put it by the young ladies to avert the stern arm of justice was the obtaining of their tickets, and in the delirium of joy, consequent upon the eventful occurrence, they had allowed their (or some) spirits to get the better of them, and trusted that their worships would kindly look over the rum welcome they had given to liberty. The Bench, however, being of opinion that all effervesenses [sic] of feeling militate, sooner or later, against the health of the body politic, and perceiving that his Excellency’s ticket had been productive of intoxication, issued another, and on a contra system, awarding fourteen days sobriety in the cells. PTLOLEMY, the messenger, appearing to be more the seduced than the seducing, was discharged with a caution, advising him that if, on the next occasion that he was sent on a similar employment, he did not manage his convoy better he might find himself in ‘straits’ with ‘breakers a-head.’
