Evidence Type: Newspaper Report
15 November 1838
Yesterday morning, a woman named BOYD, an assigned servant to MR CUTLER of Sussex-street, was had before the bench, charged with an attempt to destroy her mistress’ premises by setting fire to them. The woman had been punished sometime back, and when liberated, swore that she would be revenged on her mistress by setting fire to the place. On Tuesday, she was desired to remove a lighted log from the fire, which she did, but placed it amongst a heap of dry wood in the yard, where it was luckily discovered before the wood became thoroughly ignited. She was sentenced to be confined six months in the factory—a very lenient sentence for such a crime.
