JAMES COAN was charged with assaulting and cruelly ill-treating his own wife.* The latter persevered in the charge against her husband, which was further backed by the chief constable, who deposed to having witnessed repeated proofs of the man’s violence of temper, which was usually manifested when in a state of inebriety, to which he was habituated. The parties being both prisoners of the crown, the man was ordered to be returned into the Barracks—the female, as a matter of course, to become an inmate of the Factory.
