TRANSCRIBER’S NOTES: There is no exact match for a BRIDGET HOWELL on board the Alexander II (1816), but there were a number of convicts named BRIDGET on board. HOWELL was likely an alias or married name, although no marriage record has been located to date. There are some baptism records from around 1818 featuring the names BRIDGET HOWELL and SAMUEL HOWELL as the parents. Later gaol admissions note that BRIDGET’s native place was Limerick, which may make BRIDGET CARTY/McCARTHY/CASSIDY per Alexander II (1816) the most likely candidate. By the time the 1828 Census was mustered at the Parramatta Female Factory on 29 October 1828, BRIDGET HOWELL was an expiree, having fully served her original sentence of seven years transportation to the Colony of New South Wales. However, in April 1828, she had received a ‘Colonial sentence’, that is, a secondary offence committed in the Colony, namely receiving stolen property, and was sentenced to fourteen years’ transportation. According to her gaol admission following her sentence, the latter sentence was promptly commuted to 12 months’ confinement in the Parramatta Female Factory.
