1828 Census Record of Sarah Williams aka Rachel Pegley

29 October 1828

NUMBER: 319

NAME: RACHEL PEGLEY [sic] [see Notes]

AGE: 26

CLASS: P [sic: Prisoner]

ARRIVAL SHIP & YEAR: Morley 1820 [sic: Morley (3) (1820)]

SENTENCE: 14 years [sic: Life?]

EMPLOYMENT: not recorded

RESIDENCE: Government Factory, Parramatta [Parramatta Female Factory]

RELIGION: Protestant

TRANSCRIBER’S NOTES: There was no RACHEL/RACHAEL aboard Morley (3) (1820), but this individual was admitted to Sydney Gaol and the Parramatta Female Factory multiple times under the name RACHEL PEGLEY/RIGLEY per Morley 1820 and in the Australian copy of the 1828 Census was mustered as RACHAEL PEGLEY, Factory, wife of WILLIAM PEGLEY per Earl St. Vincent (2) (1820) aka WILLIAM PIGLER. An 1822 St. John’s, Parramatta marriage record for WILLIAM PEGLEY per Earl St. Vincent (2) (1820) confirms he married SARAH WILLIAMS per Morley (3) (1820) in 1822, thus confirming that RACHAEL/RACHEL was an alias. Note, however, that SARAH WILLIAMS actually had a life sentence, not a 14-year sentence, so this was likely a mistake in the original records bearing the lesser sentence.
