SYDNEY COURT OF QUARTER SESSIONS
The Court commenced its sittings on Monday (September 9), and closed them on Friday last; the following is a list of the cases tried: —
TUESDAY, 10th SEPTEMBER.
CHRISTOPHER PAXTON, stealing from person, to be transported to a penal settlement for seven years.
ELIZABETH LIVINGSTONE, stealing two chests of tea, twelve months’ labour in the Female Factory.
ELIZA BOOTH, stealing two chests of tea, twelve months’ labour in Sydney Gaol.
SAMUEL COLLINS, larceny, twelve months in an ironed gang.
MICHAEL ANGELO or CLARO, stealing in a dwelling, twelve months in an ironed gang.
JANE WILLIAMS, larceny, nine days’ imprisonment in Sydney Gaol.
THOMAS BENSON, larceny, fourteen days’ imprisonment in Sydney Gaol.
ANN COURTNAY [sic], receiving stolen property, twelve months’ labour in Female Factory.
THOMAS HICKEY, receiving stolen property—not guilty; remanded on another charge.
MICHAEL M’DERMOTT, robbery—not guilty, discharged.
WEDNESDAY.
THOMAS GEORGE, stealing in dwelling, six months in an ironed gang.
ADAM NEWTON, embezzlement, three months in Sydney Gaol.
WILLIAM DAWSON, THOMAS PERIGO, and DANIEL RIPLEY, rescuing a goat on the way to the pound, fined 10s. each.
JOHN TOBIN ASPINAL, stealing sheep—not guilty, discharged.
STEPHEN MECHAN, embezzlement—not guilty, discharged.
THURSDAY
BENJAMIN TAMS, larceny, eighteen months in an ironed gang.
RICHARD AYRES, larceny, six months’ labour in Parramatta Gaol.
ELLEN MAHON, larceny, three months’ labour in Female Factory.
ANN COLEMAN, larceny, six months’ labour in Female Factory.
WILLIAM BLAINEY, stealing shawls, six months’ labour in Sydney Gaol.
MARY BUCKLEY, stealing in dwelling, three months’ labour in Sydney Gaol.
JOSEPH WILKINS, highway robbery, fifteen years’ transportation to a penal settlement.
WILLIAM BRAY, highway robbery—not guilty, remanded to Cockatoo Island.
JOHN BROWNE, highway robbery—not guilty; to be forwarded to Cockatoo Island.
THOMAS KING, stealing a pair of boots—not guilty; discharged.
RICHARD BOWEN, stealing a pair of boots—not guilty; discharged.
JOSEPH MARKS, larceny—not guilty; discharged.
JOHN USHER, larceny, three months in Sydney Gaol.
FRIDAY.
MARY COUGHTON, stealing from the person, twelve months’ labour in Female Factory.
JOHN KELLY, stealing in dwelling, four months in Parramatta Gaol.
JAMES MARTIN, slaughtering a beast, six months in Parramatta Gaol.
EDWARD NEAVIS, slaughtering a beast—not guilty; discharged.
THOMAS HICKEY, assault, six months in Sydney Gaol.
Summary: — four free men and two free women; one ticket-of-leave man; three male convicts under sentence; the remaining twenty-six prisoners tried were all free by servitude.
