Convict Population.—Number of convicts in New South Wales on the 31st December, 1836, taken from a return laid before the Legislative Council by His Excellency the Governor,—At Norfolk Island, 1,247; Moreton Bay, 337; Port Macquarie, 541; Phoenix Hulk, 166; on the roads in the Surveyor General’s Department, 392; on the roads in irons, 1,152; Goat Island: 209; second class, Illawarra, 123; Mineral Surveyor’s Department, 98; Commissariat Department, 58; Hyde Park Barracks, 680; Sydney Goal [sic], 79; Female Factory, Parramatta, 578; holding tickets-of-leave, 4,480; in private service, 20, 934. Total number of convicts in New South Wales, 31,186.
