Mary Pickthorne (1814–1880)

Convict woman tried and convicted at the Old Bailey on 29 February 1836 and sentenced to transportation for life per Elizabeth IV (1836) under the name “MARY MOORE.” MARY married fellow “lifer,” WILLIAM PICKTHORNE per Portland (1) (1832), at St. John’s Church, Parramatta, with Reverend H. H. BOBART presiding, and in the presence of JOHN FOREMAN STAFF and HENRIETTA HOGAN on 3 August 1846. Just twelve days later ELLEN PICKTHORNE was born at the Parramatta Female Factory’s lying-in hospital. ELLEN was the first of many children the couple had together. MARY died on 22 September 1880 and was buried at Rookwood.
